   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0505 AM CDT TUE AUG 22 2006

   VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR SOUTHERN ID/FAR SOUTHERN
   MT/WESTERN WY/CENTRAL AND EASTERN NV/NORTHWEST UT...
...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR EASTERN WA/NORTHEAST ORE/NORTHERN
   ID/WESTERN MT...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
PROGRESSIVE UPPER FLOW REGIME WILL REMAIN ACROSS THE NORTHERN THIRD
OF THE COUNTRY...AS SOME AMPLIFICATION OCCURS THROUGH THE PERIOD VIA
SHARPENING UPPER TROUGHS OVER THE NORTHEAST STATES AND PACIFIC
NORTHWEST. UPPER RIDGE WILL REMAIN PREVALENT ACROSS THE SOUTHERN
STATES. IN THE WEST...OVERALL PATTERN WILL REMAIN FAVORABLE FOR
THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION
TO THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES AND FOUR CORNERS AREA.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - SOUTHERN ID/FAR SOUTHERN MT/WESTERN
   WY/CENTRAL AND EASTERN NV/NORTHWEST UT...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: GUSTY WINDS AND HIGH HAINES/LOW RH VALUES

MODERATELY STRONG BELT OF SOUTHERLY MID LEVEL FLOW WILL OVERSPREAD
THE NORTHERN ROCKIES/NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION TODAY. WITH
FAVORABLE MIXING IN A VERY WARM/DRY AIRMASS...A RESULTANT INCREASE
IN WIND SPEEDS IS EXPECTED ACROSS A BROAD REGION FROM NV INTO
SOUTHERN ID/NORTHERN UT AND MUCH OF WY/SOUTHERN MT. SUSTAINED WIND
SPEEDS OF 15-20 MPH ARE GENERALLY EXPECTED...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. THE
MODERATE WINDS...HIGH HAINES INDICES...AND VERY LOW 8-15 PERCENT RH
VALUES SUGGEST THE POTENTIAL FOR BOTH PLUME DOMINATED FIRES THIS
AFTERNOON AND RAPID FIRE SPREAD VIA GUSTY WINDS.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - EASTERN WA/NORTHEAST ORE/NORTHERN
   ID/WESTERN MT...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: GUSTY WINDS AND ISOLATED TO SCATTERED
   THUNDERSTORMS

A RELATIVELY STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL ALLOW GUSTY WINDS TO
DEVELOP THROUGH PASSES/CANYONS OF THE WA AND ORE CASCADES...AND THE
COLUMBIA GORGE...INTO NORTHERN ID/WESTERN MT TODAY. BROAD SCALE
WINDS OF 15-20 MPH ARE LIKELY...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. THE FIRE WEATHER
POTENTIAL WILL BE FURTHER HEIGHTENED VIA ISOLATED-SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS...ESPECIALLY ACROSS NORTHERN ID/WESTERN MT THROUGH THE
AFTERNOON. WHILE THE STORMS MAY BE A MIX OF WET AND DRY...THE
POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR NEW FIRE STARTS VIA CLOUD TO GROUND
LIGHTNING...AS WELL AS THE POTENTIAL FOR GUSTY/ERRATIC THUNDERSTORM
   DOWNDRAFTS.

...WESTERN/NORTHERN NEB AND FAR SOUTHERN SD...
GUSTY SOUTHERLY WINDS WILL EXIST TODAY ACROSS THE NORTH CENTRAL HIGH
PLAINS. MODERATE WINDS ALOFT/DEEP MIXING WILL SUPPORT SUSTAINED WIND
SPEEDS OF 20-25 MPH THIS AFTERNOON...WITH HIGHER GUSTS. HIGH
TEMPERATURES WILL MAINLY BE IN THE 90S...WITH MINIMUM RH VALUES OF
15-30 PERCENT. RECENT RAINFALL MAY TEND TO MITIGATE THE FIRE THREAT
   SOMEWHAT ACROSS THE REGION...ALTHOUGH LOCALIZED/RELATIVELY RAIN-FREE
AREAS WILL HAVE A HEIGHTENED FIRE DANGER.
