   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0355 AM CDT THU SEP 07 2006

   VALID 071200Z - 081200Z

   ...NO CRITICAL AREAS...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
UPPER RIDGE OVER THE WRN CONUS WILL WEAKEN A BIT AS A WEAK UPPER
SHORTWAVE TROUGH MOVES ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN. THIS WAVE WILL
INCREASE THUNDERSTORM COVERAGE OVER CENTRAL AND ERN NV AND FAR SERN
CA. MOST OF THESE STORMS WILL BE WET IN NATURE. LOWERING SURFACE
PRESSURE OVER NV/CA WILL ALSO TIGHTEN SFC GRADIENT A BIT WITH
LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS OVER SRN CA. FARTHER N....THERMAL RIDGE WILL
PERSIST OVER ERN WA/OR INTO WRN ID...WITH LOW RH.

ELSEWHERE...A STRONG UPPER TROUGH WILL SINK SWD ACROSS CANADA AND
WILL HELP TO BRING A SURFACE HIGH SWD INTO THE NRN PLAINS/ROCKIES.
LOW RH AND INCREASED WIND SPEEDS WILL RESULT OVER ERN MT/WY AND THE
WRN DAKOTAS. A DRY AIR MASS OVER THE SRN PLAINS/MS VALLEY WILL KEEP
RH LOW BUT WITH LIGHT WINDS.

...ERN MT...FAR WRN DAKOTAS AND ERN WY...
WINDS WILL INCREASE OUT OF THE N TODAY AT 10-15 MPH WITH HIGHER
GUSTS...AS HIGH PRESSURE BUILDS IN. RH LEVELS WILL REMAIN LOW AROUND
15 PERCENT MT AND WY...RISING TO NEAR 20 PERCENT WRN DAKOTAS. MUCH
OF THIS AREA HAS RECEIVED LITTLE RAINFALL RECENTLY...THUS INCREASED
   FIRE DANGER WILL EXIST.

   ...PORTIONS OF SRN CA...
LOCALLY GUSTY WEST WINDS WILL OCCUR THIS AFTERNOON MAINLY ACROSS ERN
KERN AND NRN LOS ANGELES COUNTIES. GUSTS OF 15-20 MPH APPEAR
LIKELY...FOCUSED THROUGH MTN PASSES AND EMERGING INTO THE ANTELOPE
VALLEY. MIN RH VALUES NEAR 15 PERCENT ARE EXPECTED. IN ADDITION...A
MDT TO HIGH HAINES INDEX WILL BE IN PLACE...THUS...ONGOING FIRES MAY
   INCREASE IN INTENSITY THIS AFTERNOON.

   ...GREAT BASIN...
WEAK UPPER TROUGH WILL HELP TO PRODUCE WIDE-SPREAD THUNDERSTORMS
THIS AFTERNOON INTO TONIGHT. MOST STORMS WILL BE WET WITHIN MOIST
AXIS OVER SERN CA INTO SRN NV...BUT WRN EDGE OF STORMS WILL LIKELY
BE A MIXTURE OF WET AND DRY. GIVEN SEVERAL DAYS OF STORMS...THE AIR
MASS HAS MOISTENED THUS MIN RH VALUES WILL NOT BE PARTICULARLY
   LOW...FROM 15-20 PERCENT.

   DAY 2 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0446 AM CDT THU SEP 07 2006

   VALID 081200Z - 091200Z

   ...NO CRITICAL AREAS...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
AN UPPER HIGH WILL REMAIN OVER THE WRN CONUS WITH THERMAL RIDGE FROM
ERN WA/OR/WRN ID INTO THE GREAT BASIN AND SRN CA. THIS WILL KEEP
TEMPERATURES WARM WITH LOW RH. A SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL APPROACH THE
PACIFIC NW LATE FRIDAY...HELPING TO STRENGTHEN A PACIFIC COLD FRONT
WHICH WILL REMAIN W OF THE CASCADES MOST OF THE DAY. IT WILL ALSO
BRING WITH IT INCREASED WINDS ALOFT PRODUCING GUSTY RIDGE TOP WINDS
IN THE CASCADES. GUSTY WLY WINDS WILL ALSO OCCUR THROUGH THE
COLUMBIA GORGE WITH STRONG PRESSURE GRADIENT NEAR THE PACIFIC FRONT.
THIS FRONT WILL SURGE E OF THE CASCADES LATE FRI...SHIFTING WINDS
AND BRINGING WITH IT HIGHER RH VALUES.

SURFACE PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL TIGHTEN A BIT MORE ACROSS SRN CA
BETWEEN MARINE LAYER AND INLAND LOW...WITH GUSTY WINDS THROUGH
PASSES AND CANYONS. MEANWHILE...UPPER DISTURBANCE MOVING THROUGH THE
RIDGE WILL CONTINUE TO TREK EWD ACROSS THE FOUR CORNERS STATES WITH
   WIDESPREAD RAIN.

   ...SRN CA...
NEAR CRITICAL FIRE CONDITIONS WILL MATERIALIZE ON FRIDAY OVER A
SMALL AREA OF SRN CA. THIS WILL INCLUDE ERN KERN...NRN LOS
ANGELES...AND WRN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES. THE INCREASED PRESSURE
GRADIENT WILL HELP BRING GUSTY SWLY WINDS THROUGH PASSES AND
CANYONS...EMERGING INTO THE ANTELOPE VALLEY. SUSTAINED SPEEDS IN
EXCESS OF 20 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH HIGHER GUSTS BY EVENING. RH
LEVELS WILL RISE HOWEVER...AND WILL NOT GET BELOW 20 PERCENT EXCEPT
ON A VERY LOCAL LEVEL. OF PARTICULAR CONCERN IS THE EFFECT THE WINDS
   WILL HAVE ON ONGOING FIRES.

OTHER AREAS INCLUDING THE MOHAVE DESERT...SRN NV AND THE LOWER CO
RIVER VALLEY WILL ALSO EXPERIENCE INCREASED WINDS...BUT NOT VERY
STRONG. THE RH WILL BE LOW HERE AS WELL...BUT IN THE WAKE OF RECENT
   PRECIPITATION...FIRE THREAT WILL BE MINIMAL.

   ...WA/OR...
AS UPPER SHORTWAVE TROUGH APPROACHES...A COLD FRONT WILL INTENSIFY
ALONG AND W OF THE CASCADES. DURING THE AFTERNOON...A STRONG THERMAL
RIDGE WILL EXIST E OF THE CASCADES...WITH WARM TEMPERATURES AND LOW
RH. THE FRONT WILL SURGE EWD LATE IN THE DAY INTO THE EVENING...WITH
PARTICULARLY GUSTY WEST WINDS THROUGH PASSES AND CANYONS. SUSTAINED
SPEEDS OF 15-25 MPH ARE ANTICIPATED THROUGH THE GORGE AND
IMMEDIATELY E OF THE OREGON CASCADES. ALTHOUGH RH WILL BE ON THE
INCREASE...THE INCREASED WINDS WILL CAUSE ERRATIC FIRE BEHAVIOR NEAR
   ONGOING FLAMES.

   ...SRN MT...
ELY WINDS NEAR 15 MPH ARE EXPECTED WITH STRONG SURFACE HIGH TO THE
EAST. THE EAST WINDS WILL INCREASE RH LEVELS SOMEWHAT...BUT BY PEAK
HEATING MIN RH SHOULD DIP BELOW 20 PERCENT. AXIS OF STEEP MID LEVEL
LAPSE RATES AND RESULTING MODERATE HAINES INDEX WILL BE IN PLACE AS
WELL. ALL THIS WILL COMBINE TO PRODUCE FAVORABLE FIRE CONDITIONS BY
   LATE FRIDAY.
