   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0237 AM CST SUN JAN 21 2007

   VALID 211200Z - 221200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR SRN CA COASTAL AREAS TO THE LOWER
   CO RIVER VALLEY...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
A SHORTWAVE TROUGH OVER UT WILL DIG SWD AND BECOME A CLOSED CUTOFF
LOW OVER AZ TODAY. A LARGE UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE OFF THE W COAST WILL
BUILD INLAND ACROSS THE PACIFIC NW AND NRN INTERMOUNTAIN W. AT THE
SURFACE...HIGH PRESSURE WILL STRENGTHEN AS IT DROPS SEWD FROM THE
PACIFIC NW INTO THE GREAT BASIN.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - SRN CA COASTAL AREAS TO THE LOWER CO
   RIVER VALLEY...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: STRONG OFFSHORE WINDS / LOW RH / LONG-TERM
   DROUGHT

INCREASING SUBSIDENCE BEHIND THE SWD MOVING CUTOFF LOW OVER AZ AND A
TIGHTENING SURFACE PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL CONTRIBUTE TO SANTA ANA
WINDS OVER SRN CA AND DRY NLYS OVER THE LOWER CO RIVER VALLEY.
ALTHOUGH OFFSHORE WINDS WILL INCREASE THROUGH THE MORNING...THE
STRONGEST WINDS WILL OCCUR LATE THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH MUCH OF THE
OVERNIGHT. STRONG MID/UPPER-LEVEL FLOW WILL BECOME
UNIDIRECTIONALLY-ALIGNED FROM THE N/NE. THIS WILL TRANSLATE INTO
STRENGTHENING LOW-LEVEL FLOW OF 50 TO 60 MPH AS SUBSIDENCE
INCREASES. SUSTAINED SURFACE SPEEDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WILL BE
LIKELY...ESPECIALLY ACROSS CANYONS/PASSES NEAR THE COASTAL MTNS. RH
VALUES WILL FALL TO AROUND 10 TO 15 PERCENT BY LATE AFTERNOON...AS
TEMPERATURES WARM INTO THE 50S/60S. VERY POOR OVERNIGHT RH RECOVERY
CAN BE EXPECTED IN THE COASTAL AREAS GIVEN THE CONTINUED STRONG
   WINDS.

   DAY 2 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0334 AM CST SUN JAN 21 2007

   VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR SRN CA COASTAL AREAS...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
LITTLE CHANGE IS EXPECTED IN THE OVERALL SYNOPTIC PATTERN FROM DAY
   1. A CUTOFF UPPER-LEVEL LOW OVER SRN AZ SHOULD MEANDER SLOWLY SEWD
INTO FAR NRN MEXICO BY 12Z TUE. A LARGE UPPER-LEVEL RIDGE WILL BE
MAINTAINED FROM OFF THE W COAST NEWD TO THE NRN INTERMOUNTAIN W.
SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE WILL REMAIN ANCHORED ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - SRN CA COASTAL AREAS...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: OFFSHORE WINDS / LOW RH / LONG-TERM DROUGHT

A SANTA ANA WIND EVENT WILL BE ONGOING MON MORNING WITH STRONG
OFFSHORE WINDS AND POOR OVERNIGHT RH RECOVERY. WIND SPEEDS SHOULD
GRADUALLY SUBSIDE THROUGH THE DAY AS THE CUTOFF LOW OVER NRN MEXICO
MOVES SLOWLY SEWD AND LOW/MID-LEVEL WINDS DIMINISH. ALTHOUGH A
MODERATE SURFACE PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL LIKELY MAINTAIN SUSTAINED
SPEEDS AOA 20 MPH THROUGH MON EVENING...IMMEDIATELY DOWNSLOPE OF THE
COASTAL RANGES. BY MON AFTERNOON...LOW RH FROM 6 TO 12 PERCENT WILL
BE LIKELY AS HIGH TEMPERATURES REACH INTO THE 60S.

   ...LOWER CO RIVER VALLEY...
WEAKER LOW-LEVEL WINDS AND MARGINALLY LOW RH CONDITIONS COMPARED TO
DAY 1 PRECLUDE A CRITICAL AREA ISSUANCE ATTM. SUBSIDENCE BEHIND THE
NRN MEXICO LOW WILL DIMINISH...WITH SUSTAINED AFTERNOON SURFACE
WINDS FROM 15 TO 20 MPH. MODEL GUIDANCE SUGGESTS LOW-LEVEL FLOW WILL
ALSO VEER TO A MORE NELY COMPONENT...ADVECTING SLIGHTLY MORE MOIST
AIR FROM WRN/CNTRL AZ. RH VALUES SHOULD ONLY DROP TO AROUND 15 TO 20
   PERCENT.
