   VALID 031200Z - 041200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN TX...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
WITHIN THE LONGWAVE TROUGH OVER THE EASTERN TWO-THIRDS OF THE
CONUS...A SHEARED SHORTWAVE TROUGH WILL DIVE SOUTHEASTWARD ACROSS
THE SOUTHERN PLAINS AND SOUTHEAST STATES TODAY. COINCIDENT WITH AN
UPPER RIDGE BUILDING INTO THE WESTERN STATES...AN EXPANSIVE AREA OF
HIGH PRESSURE WILL EXTEND FROM THE GREAT BASIN/INTERMOUNTAIN WEST TO
   THE SOUTHERN PLAINS.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN TX...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: STRONG NORTHERLY WINDS AND LOW RH

IN THE WAKE OF A DRY COLD FRONT...GUSTY NORTHERLY WINDS AND A DRY
AIRMASS WILL LEAD TO CRITICAL CONDITIONS ACROSS A LARGE PORTION OF
CENTRAL/SOUTHERN TX TODAY. MODEST HEATING...WITH HIGHS RANGING FROM
AROUND 60 ACROSS CENTRAL TX TO THE MIDDLE 70S ACROSS FAR SOUTH
TX...WILL ALLOW RH VALUES TO DROP TO CRITICAL LEVELS THIS
AFTERNOON...AS LOW AS 15 PERCENT ACROSS THE HILL COUNTRY. SUSTAINED
NORTHERLY WINDS OF 20-25 MPH WILL BE LIKELY WITH HIGHER GUSTS. THE
PRIMARY THREAT WILL BE DURING THE AFTERNOON WHEN TEMPERATURES ARE
   WARMEST.

   ...SOUTHERN CA/SOUTHERN AZ...
ON THE FRINGE OF A NORTHERLY MID LEVEL JET...GUSTY
OFFSHORE/DOWNSLOPE WINDS WILL BE COMMON ACROSS THE COASTAL AREAS OF
SOUTHERN CA...AS WELL AS MUCH OF THE LOWER CO RIVER VALLEY AND
PORTIONS OF CENTRAL/SOUTHERN AZ. AMIDST A STRONG OFFSHORE
GRADIENT/SANTA ANA REGIME...THE STRONGEST WINDS ARE LIKELY ACROSS
THE COASTAL MOUNTAINS/VALLEYS OF SOUTHERN CA TODAY...WHERE
SIGNIFICANT WIND GUSTS OVER 50 MPH ARE POSSIBLE. WITH THE STRONG
WINDS AND MILDER TEMPERATURES/MODESTLY LOW RH VALUES...LOCALIZED
CRITICAL FIRE CONDITIONS WILL OCCUR IN AREAS THAT HAVE RECEIVED
   RELATIVELY LITTLE PRECIPITATION.

TO THE EAST...NORTHERLY WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 15-20 MPH FROM THE CO
RIVER VALLEY INTO CENTRAL/SOUTHERN AZ ALONG/SOUTHWEST OF THE
MOGOLLON RIM. THIS WILL PRODUCE NEAR CRITICAL FIRE
   CONDITIONS WITH DROUGHT PERSISTING.

...SOUTHEAST STATES INCLUDING THE CAROLINAS INTO SOUTHERN VA...
DRY WESTERLY FLOW AND CONTINENTAL TRAJECTORIES WILL DOMINATE A LARGE
PORTION OF THE SOUTHEAST STATES THROUGH THE PERIOD. WHILE
NEAR-CRITICAL RH VALUES ARE ANTICIPATED ACROSS NORTHERN FL INTO
ADJACENT PORTIONS OF GA/AL...THE LOWEST RH VALUES THIS AFTERNOON ARE
EXPECTED AMIDST STRONG DOWNSLOPE FLOW ACROSS THE PIEDMONT/COASTAL
PLAIN AREAS OF SC/NC/SOUTHERN VA. ACROSS THE CAROLINAS/SOUTHERN
VA...RH VALUES AS LOW AS THE TEENS ARE POSSIBLE...WITH SUSTAINED
WIND SPEEDS OF 20-25 MPH WITH HIGHER GUSTS. IN SPITE OF THE GUSTY
WINDS AND/OR LOW RH VALUES TODAY...IT APPEARS THAT THE OVERALL FIRE
THREAT WILL BE LARGELY MITIGATED BY THE RECENT PRECIPITATION.
