   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0438 AM CDT THU MAY 17 2007

   VALID 171200Z - 181200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR PORTIONS OF THE SE...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
A STRONG UPPER TROUGH WILL DIG SEWD THROUGH THE ERN CONUS THROUGH
THE PERIOD. AHEAD OF THIS UPPER TROUGH A SFC COLD FRONT WILL MOVE
SEWD...EXTENDING FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO INTO NRN FL BY THE END OF
THE PERIOD. IN THE WAKE OF THE COLD FRONT...DRY AIR AND BREEZY
CONDITIONS WILL DEVELOP OVER PORTIONS OF THE SERN STATES...LEADING
TO A CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER THREAT. FURTHER WEST...A BROAD UPPER
RIDGE WILL EXTEND ACROSS THE ROCKIES. A NRN STREAM SYSTEM WILL TOP
THE RIDGE AND SUPPORT SFC PRESSURE FALLS OVER THE NRN PLAINS. AS A
RESULT...BREEZY SLY WINDS WILL DEVELOP OVER THE CENTRAL/NRN PLAINS.
SCT CONVECTION WILL CONTINUE OVER MUCH OF THE INTERMTN WEST. WHERE
LOW LEVELS WILL BE DRY...ISOLATED DRY TSTMS ARE EXPECTED OVER THE
   NRN GREAT BASIN/NRN ROCKIES.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - PORTIONS OF CENTRAL/SRN AL...WRN GA
   AND THE FLA PANHANDLE...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: SUSTAINED NLY WINDS FROM 15-20 MPH...MIN RH
READINGS FROM 20-30 PERCENT...LONG TERM DROUGHT

BEHIND A COLD FRONT...DRIER AIR WILL MOVE INTO THE AREA. DEWPTS ARE
EXPECTED TO BE IN THE 40S IN MOST OF THE AREA BY MID AFTERNOON. WITH
TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S...MIN RH READINGS WILL AVERAGE AROUND 25
PERCENT. MODERATE NLY WINDS ALOFT /25-30 MPH/ WILL MIX DOWN TO THE
SURFACE BY LATE MORNING AND SUPPORT SUSTAINED NLY SFC WINDS FROM
15-20 MPH. AREAS THAT RECEIVED APPRECIABLE RAINFALL AMTS OF 1-2
INCHES YESTERDAY /SWRN AL AND WRN FL PANHANDLE/ WILL NOT BE INCLUDED
IN THE CRITICAL OUTLOOK AREA. CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE
EXPECTED TO END AROUND SUNSET WITH DIMINISHING WINDS.

   ...NRN ROCKIES/NRN GREAT BASIN...
ON THE LEADING EDGE OF THE MID LEVEL MOISTURE...TSTMS ARE EXPECTED
TO DEVELOP AGAIN OVER THE AREA TODAY. WITH SLIGHTLY GREATER FORCING
ALOFT...SCT TSTMS ARE EXPECTED. DESPITE RELATIVELY DRY SFC
CONDITIONS PRECIP WATER VALUES WERE HIGH ENOUGH /0.50 TO 0.60
INCHES/ SUCH THAT SOME WET TSTMS ARE ALSO EXPECTED. HOWEVER...
STRENGTHENING MID LEVEL WINDS WILL SUPPORT FASTER STORM MOTIONS THAN
YESTERDAY AND MARGINALLY WET TSTMS MAY BE CAPABLE OF PRODUCING
   ISOLATED "DRY" LIGHTNING STARTS.

   ...NRN PLAINS....
AS THE UPPER RIDGE OVER THE NRN ROCKIES FLATTENS...AN AREA OF LOW
PRESSURE WILL DEEPEN OVER THE NRN HIGH PLAINS. AS A RESULT THE SFC
PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL INTENSIFY OVER THE NRN/CENTRAL PLAINS AND SLY
WINDS WILL INCREASE TO BETWEEN 20-25 MPH WITH GUSTS OVER 30 MPH.
LACK OF QUALITY MOISTURE RETURN WILL LIMIT DEWPTS INTO THE 40S. WITH
TEMPERATURES IN THE 70S TO LOWER 80S...MIN RH READINGS WILL AVERAGE
FROM 25-30 PERCENT OR JUST ABOVE CRITICAL LEVELS.
