   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0358 AM CDT MON JUL 23 2007

   VALID 231200Z - 241200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR NORTHEAST NV/NORTHERN UT INTO
CENTRAL/EASTERN ID AND SOUTHERN MT/WESTERN WY FOR DRY
   THUNDERSTORMS...
...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR CENTRAL/NORTHEAST ORE AND
   NORTHEAST CA FOR DRY THUNDERSTORMS...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
FAIRLY ACTIVE THUNDERSTORM DAY ANTICIPATED ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE
PACIFIC NORTHWEST/EASTERN GREAT BASIN AND NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN
REGION...WITH POTENTIAL FOR A NUMBER OF LIGHTNING IGNITIONS/NEW FIRE
   STARTS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

EXPANSIVE UPPER RIDGE WILL REMAIN DOMINANT FROM THE
SOUTHWEST STATES INTO THE NORTHERN PLAINS...WHILE PERSISTENT
CLOSED/CUT-OFF UPPER LOW LINGERS OVER THE CENTRAL APPALACHIANS. ON
THE NORTHWEST PERIPHERY OF THE WESTERN STATES RIDGE...A SHORTWAVE
TROUGH WILL CROSS THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST/BRITISH COLUMBIA THROUGH
TONIGHT. LARGE SCALE FORCING ASSOCIATED WITH THIS FEATURE...ALONG
WITH A NORTHWARD TRANSITION OF MONSOONAL MOISTURE...WILL LEAD TO
ISOLATED TO SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS PORTIONS OF THE PACIFIC
NORTHWEST/EASTERN GREAT BASIN AND NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN
REGION...MOST OF WHICH WILL BE DRY.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - NORTHEAST NV/NORTHERN UT INTO
CENTRAL/EASTERN ID AND SOUTHERN MT/WESTERN WY FOR DRY
   THUNDERSTORMS...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: DRY THUNDERSTORMS AND HOT/DRY CONDITIONS

APPROACHING UPSTREAM SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND INCREASING MID LEVEL
MOISTURE FROM THE SOUTH WILL SUPPORT ISOLATED TO SCATTERED
THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING FROM THE EASTERN GREAT BASIN
INTO THE NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION/CONTINENTAL DIVIDE VICINITY.
GIVEN THE PERSISTENCE OF A HOT/WELL-MIXED DEEP BOUNDARY LAYER...AN
APPRECIABLE PORTION OF THESE THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE DRY IN
NATURE...WITH LIMITED RAINFALL AND NEW FIRE STARTS LIKELY GIVEN HIGH
LIGHTNING IGNITION EFFICIENCIES. IMPACTS ON ANY ONGOING FIRES MAY BE
   CONSIDERABLE AS WELL...AS THUNDERSTORM DOWNDRAFTS/CONVECTIVE
OUTFLOWS MAY HAMPER FIRE CONTROL EFFORTS VIA STRONG/GUSTY AND
   ERRATIC WINDS.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - CENTRAL/NORTHEAST ORE AND NORTHEAST
   CA FOR DRY THUNDERSTORMS...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: DRY THUNDERSTORMS AND HOT/DRY CONDITIONS

WITH APPROACHING SHORTWAVE TROUGH AND SUFFICIENT MID LEVEL
MOISTURE...A RELATIVELY MORE MARGINAL POTENTIAL/COVERAGE FOR DRY
THUNDERSTORMS WILL EXIST ALONG/EAST OF THE CASCADES ACROSS PORTIONS
OF CENTRAL/NORTHEAST ORE AND NORTHEAST CA THIS AFTERNOON AND
EVENING. ALTHOUGH STORMS MAY TEND TO BE ISOLATED IN NATURE...NEW
FIRE IGNITIONS ARE A DISTINCT POSSIBILITY WITH LIMITED POTENTIAL FOR
WETTING RAINS. GUSTY/ERRATIC WINDS CAN EXPECTED IN VICINITY OF ANY
   THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON/EVENING.

   ...MUCH OF NV/EASTERN ORE/SOUTHERN ID...
OUTSIDE OF DRY THUNDERSTORM POTENTIAL...HOT AND DRY CONDITIONS WILL
CONTINUE ACROSS MUCH OF NV/EASTERN ORE/SOUTHERN ID TODAY. AS HAS
BEEN THE CASE OVER THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS...THE HOT
TEMPERATURES/STEEP LAPSE RATES WITH HIGH HAINES INDICES WILL PROMOTE
PLUME DOMINATED FIRES...WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF LARGE FIRE GROWTH OF
   EXISTING FIRES DURING THE AFTERNOON.

...EASTERN WY/SOUTHEAST MT INTO THE WESTERN DAKOTAS...
BENEATH THE UPPER RIDGE...HOT TEMPERATURES ARE AGAIN EXPECTED ACROSS
THE NORTHERN HIGH PLAINS THIS AFTERNOON...WITH HIGHS REACHING 100 F
IN MOST AREAS. A DEEPLY MIXED AIRMASS/STEEP LAPSE RATE ENVIRONMENT
WILL HEIGHTEN THE FIRE DANGER...ALTHOUGH SUSTAINED WINDS SHOULD BE
15 MPH OR LESS IN MOST LOCALES.

   DAY 2 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0539 AM CDT MON JUL 23 2007

   VALID 241200Z - 251200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR EASTERN MT/WESTERN ND/FAR
   NORTHWEST SD...
...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR NORTHEAST CA/SOUTHEAST
ORE/NORTHERN NV/SOUTHERN ID FOR DRY THUNDERSTORMS...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
BROAD UPPER RIDGE WILL REMAIN PROMINENT FEATURE FROM THE SOUTHWEST
STATES TO THE NORTHERN PLAINS/SOUTHERN CANADA...WITH MONSOON
MOISTURE LEADING TO SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS MUCH OF THE FOUR
CORNERS REGION/GREAT BASIN AND INTERMOUNTAIN WEST. ON THE NORTHERN
PERIPHERY OF THE UPPER RIDGE...A SHORTWAVE TROUGH IS FORECAST TO
CROSS THE WESTERN CANADIAN PROVINCES...WITH A COLD FRONT ADVANCING
EASTWARD ACROSS MT AND THE ADJACENT NORTHERN INTERMOUNTAIN REGION.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - EASTERN MT/WESTERN ND/FAR NORTHWEST
   SD...

   PRIMARY CONDITIONS: HOT TEMPERATURES/GUSTY WINDS

BENEATH THE UPPER RIDGE...AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES ACROSS THE HIGH
PLAINS OF EASTERN MT/WESTERN DAKOTAS ARE AGAIN EXPECTED TO REACH 100
DEGREES ON TUESDAY. DEEPENING LOW PRESSURE ACROSS EASTERN MT AND AN
INCREASING PRESSURE GRADIENT WILL LEAD TO GUSTY SOUTHEASTERLY WINDS
BY TUESDAY AFTERNOON...WITH SUSTAINED WINDS AS HIGH AS 15-20 MPH
/WITH HIGHER GUSTS/ HEIGHTENING THE FIRE DANGER. A COLD FRONT WILL
PROGRESS EASTWARD ACROSS CENTRAL/EASTERN MT TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND
EVENING...WITH A SUBSEQUENT WIND SHIFT...AS WELL AS A COMBINATION OF
WET/DRY THUNDERSTORMS WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF SOME FIRE STARTS AND
   STRONG/GUSTY WINDS.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - NORTHEAST CA/SOUTHEAST ORE/NORTHERN
   NV/SOUTHERN ID FOR DRY THUNDERSTORMS...

   PRIMARY CONDITIONS: MAINLY DRY THUNDERSTORMS

AS SEVERAL MID LEVEL DISTURBANCES ROUND THE PERIPHERY OF THE UPPER
RIDGE...AN INCREASE IN MID LEVEL MOISTURE/PRECIPITABLE WATER VALUES
IS EXPECTED INTO TUESDAY. NEVERTHELESS...IT APPEARS RAINFALL WILL
REMAIN LIMITED...WITH MAINLY DRY THUNDERSTORMS EXPECTED ACROSS THE
NORTHERN GREAT BASIN AND ADJACENT PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST CA/SOUTHEAST
ORE INTO SOUTHERN ID. THE POTENTIAL WILL EXIST FOR NEW FIRE STARTS
   OUTSIDE OF RAIN CORES.

...WESTERN WY/SOUTHWEST MT AND CENTRAL/EASTERN ID...
GIVEN ADDITIONAL INCREASE IN MONSOON MOISTURE...THUNDERSTORMS WILL
LIKELY TREND MORE WET IN NATURE ACROSS PORTIONS OF WESTERN
WY/SOUTHWEST MT AND CENTRAL/EASTERN ID ON TUESDAY.
NEVERTHELESS...LIGHTNING COULD SPARK NEW FIRES OUTSIDE OF RAIN
CORES...WITH POTENTIAL FOR STRONG CONVECTIVE DOWNDRAFTS.

   ...SOUTHERN CA...
WITH A CONTINUED WESTWARD PUSH OF MOISTURE...AN INCREASE IN
THUNDERSTORM COVERAGE APPEARS LIKELY ACROSS THE INTERIOR PORTIONS OF
SOUTHERN CA AND THE SOUTHERN SIERRA MOUNTAINS. NEW LIGHTNING
   IGNITIONS MAY BE POSSIBLE.
