   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0237 AM CDT MON OCT 01 2007

   VALID 011200Z - 021200Z

   ...NO CRITICAL AREAS...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
LEAD SHORTWAVE TROUGH/UPPER LOW WILL GRADUALLY WEAKEN AS IT MOVES
EASTWARD OVER THE GREAT LAKES REGION THROUGH TONIGHT.
SUBSEQUENT/UPSTREAM UPPER TROUGH ALONG THE WEST COAST WILL QUICKLY
TRANSITION TOWARD THE ROCKIES...WITH AN ASSOCIATED COLD FRONT
CROSSING THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST/GREAT BASIN. THE COLD FRONT WILL
BRING GUSTY WINDS TO PORTIONS OF THE INTERMOUNTAIN WEST/GREAT
BASIN...ALONG WITH SOME THUNDERSTORMS AND A DISTINCT WIND SHIFT. IN
THE EAST...THE UPPER RIDGE/SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE IS FORECAST TO
GRADUALLY WEAKEN...WITH A DIMINISHING INFLUENCE ACROSS THE SOUTHEAST
   STATES.

   ...WY...
COLD FRONT WILL CROSS WY THROUGH THE PERIOD...LIKELY REACHING
PORTIONS OF CENTRAL WY BY EARLY EVENING. WELL AHEAD OF THE COLD
FRONT THIS AFTERNOON...CONDITIONS COULD NEAR CRITICAL THRESHOLDS
ACROSS EASTERN WY...WITH DOWNSLOPE TRAJECTORIES LEADING TO A REBOUND
OF TEMPERATURES WELL INTO THE 70S/LOWER 80S...IN ADDITION TO
NEAR-CRITICAL RH VALUES. SUSTAINED SOUTHWEST WINDS OF 20-30 MPH ARE
LIKELY...WITH DEEP MIXING FAVORABLE FOR THE POSSIBILITY OF WIND
GUSTS TO 40-45 MPH. IN SPITE OF THE STRONG WINDS/LOW RH...SOME
RECENT PRECIPITATION/QUESTIONABLE FUELS MAY BE LIMITING FACTORS.

FARTHER WEST...VERY STRONG WINDS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE MAJORITY OF
WESTERN/CENTRAL WY TODAY...ALONG WITH A WIND SHIFT WITH THE PASSAGE
OF THE COLD FRONT. SUSTAINED WINDS OF 25-35 MPH /WITH CONSIDERABLY
HIGHER GUSTS/ ARE LIKELY...ESPECIALLY OVER AND IMMEDIATELY
DOWNSTREAM OF HIGHER TERRAIN. HOWEVER...RH VALUES WILL TEND TO NOT
MEET CRITICAL THRESHOLDS...AND FUELS APPEAR TO BE MARGINAL AS WELL.

   ...UT/EASTERN NV...
ASSOCIATED WITH THE POTENT UPPER TROUGH/COLD FRONT...BREEZY
CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED ACROSS MUCH OF THE GREAT BASIN. SUSTAINED
WINDS OF 15-25 MPH /WITH HIGHER GUSTS/ WILL BE POSSIBLE...ALONG WITH
A WIND SHIFT WITH THE PASSAGE OF THE COLD FRONT...WHICH IS LIKELY TO
CROSS THE NORTHERN HALVES OF NV/UT BY EARLY EVENING. IN SPITE OF THE
GUSTY WINDS AND WIND SHIFT...COOL TEMPERATURES/SUFFICIENTLY HIGH RH
VALUES SUGGEST CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS ARE UNLIKELY. IN
ADDITION...JUST AHEAD OF THE FRONT...SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS
SHOULD INCREASE THIS AFTERNOON AND EARLY EVENING ACROSS SOUTHERN
   NV/SOUTHWEST UT.

   ...SOUTHEAST STATES...
AS THE INFLUENCE OF SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE WEAKENS...DEWPOINTS AND
AFTERNOON RH VALUES SHOULD CONTINUE TO GRADUALLY INCREASE ACROSS THE
SOUTHEAST STATES TODAY. WHILE DRY WEATHER WILL CONTINUE...CRITICAL
   FIRE CONDITIONS ARE NOT EXPECTED.

   ...COASTAL SOUTHERN CA...
IN THE WAKE OF THE UPPER TROUGH...SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE SHOULD
QUICKLY BUILD ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN TONIGHT. AS SUCH...A MODEST
OFFSHORE GRADIENT COULD LEAD TO A BOUT OF LOCALLY GUSTY WINDS
TONIGHT/EARLY TUESDAY FOR THE COASTAL AREAS OF SOUTHERN CA.

THUNDERSTORMS AND GUSTY WINDS TO MUCH OF THE CENTRAL STATES. IN THE
WAKE OF THESE FEATURES...EVOLUTION OF AN EXPANSIVE LONGWAVE TROUGH
IS EXPECTED OVER THE WESTERN STATES AND MUCH OF CANADA INTO

   ...COASTAL AREAS OF SOUTHERN CA...

PRECIPITATION WILL BE CONSIDERABLE COMPENSATING FACTORS...WITH WINDS
EXPECTED TO SUBSIDE BY AROUND SUNSET.
