   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0348 AM CDT TUE APR 22 2008

   VALID 221200Z - 231200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR WRN ND / FAR NWRN SD / FAR ERN
   MT...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
AN UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL MOVE E/NEWD FROM THE NRN PLAINS ACROSS
THE UPPER MS RIVER VALLEY AND S-CNTRL CANADA. IN THE WAKE OF THIS
TROUGH...UPPER FLOW IS EXPECTED TO BECOME MORE AMPLIFIED AS AN ERN
PACIFIC TROUGH DEEPENS AND MOVES INLAND IN THE WEST. A DOWNSTREAM
RIDGE WILL BUILD FROM THE SRN PLAINS TO THE LOWER OH RIVER VALLEY.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - WRN ND / FAR NWRN SD / FAR ERN MT...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: STRONG WINDS / LOW RH / SEVERE TO EXTREME
   DROUGHT

A COMPLEX FIRE WEATHER SCENARIO IS EXPECTED TO UNFOLD TODAY AS A
MID-LEVEL SHORT WAVE TROUGH CROSSES THE REGION. MODEL GUIDANCE
DIFFER WITH REGARDS TO TIMING OF STRONG SUBSIDENCE IN THE WAKE OF
TROUGH PASSAGE AND CONSEQUENTLY ON STRENGTH OF WLY LOW-LEVEL FLOW
DURING THE AFTERNOON. THE CONSENSUS SUGGESTS SUSTAINED SURFACE
SPEEDS SHOULD BECOME RATHER STRONG...AVERAGING FROM 25 TO 30 MPH.

IR SAT IMAGERY AND SURFACE OBSERVATIONS DEPICT SUBSTANTIAL
MID/UPPER-LEVEL CLOUDINESS OVERHEAD AND UPSTREAM ACROSS THE NRN
ROCKIES. POCKETS OF GREATER INSOLATION AND WLY DOWNSLOPE
TRAJECTORIES SHOULD STILL RESULT IN TEMPERATURES WARMING INTO THE
50S. THIS WOULD ALLOW RH TO FALL TO BETWEEN 12 TO 20 PERCENT AROUND
PEAK HEATING...SUPPORTING A MODEST DURATION CRITICAL THREAT.

...ANTELOPE VALLEY OF CA INTO SRN NV...
WITH THE APPROACH OF A SHORT WAVE TROUGH OFF THE PACIFIC
COAST...LOW/MID-LEVEL SWLYS WILL STRENGTHEN RAPIDLY LATE THIS
AFTERNOON INTO THIS EVENING. SUSTAINED WINDS SHOULD REACH 20 TO 25
MPH NEAR SUNSET. THIS WOULD LIKELY BE JUXTAPOSED WITH CRITICALLY LOW
RH OF 8 TO 15 PERCENT FOR A SHORT PERIOD PRIOR TO THE ONSET OF
   NOCTURNAL COOLING.

   DAY 2 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0454 AM CDT TUE APR 22 2008

   VALID 231200Z - 241200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR PORTIONS OF THE SRN ROCKIES/GREAT
   BASIN...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
WRN CONUS UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH WILL PROGRESS FARTHER INLAND...BECOMING
CENTERED ACROSS THE GREAT BASIN BY EARLY THU. A SERIES OF IMPULSES
WILL LIKELY EJECT DOWNSTREAM OF THE MAIN TROUGH INTO THE PLAINS. AT
THE SURFACE...LEE CYCLOGENESIS WILL OCCUR ACROSS ERN WY/CO. A DRY
LINE WILL BE DRAPED SWD ALONG THE LEE OF THE SRN ROCKIES.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - PORTIONS OF THE SRN ROCKIES/GREAT
   BASIN...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: STRONG WINDS / LOW RH

LOW/MID-LEVEL SWLYS WILL STRENGTHEN ACROSS THE SOUTHWEST IN RESPONSE
TO APPROACHING UPPER-LEVEL TROUGH AND DOWNSTREAM LEE
CYCLOGENESIS...OVERSPREADING A VERY DRY ANTECEDENT AIR MASS.
SUSTAINED SURFACE WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH APPEAR MOST LIKELY IN A
CORRIDOR ALONG THE CO RIVER VALLEY AND INVOF SRN ROCKIES. WIDESPREAD
LOW RH VALUES OF 5 TO 15 PERCENT WILL DEVELOP DURING THE AFTERNOON.

SIGNIFICANT UNCERTAINTY EXISTS WITH THE ERN EXTENT OF THE CRITICAL
THREAT. A VERY SHARP DRY LINE SHOULD SETUP AS LOW-LEVEL S/SELYS
ADVECT RICH MOISTURE /SURFACE DEW POINTS IN THE 50S/ INTO THE HIGH
PLAINS...IN CONTRAST TO SINGLE DIGIT DEWS ALONG THE LEE OF THE SRN
ROCKIES. ATTM...WILL DEFER TO MORE CONSERVATIVE MODEL GUIDANCE WITH
THE ERN PLACEMENT OF THE CRITICAL AREA DELINEATION.
