   DAY 1 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0126 AM CST SAT JAN 17 2009

   VALID 171200Z - 181200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR PORTIONS OF SRN CA...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
THE UPPER AIR PATTERN IS CHARACTERIZED BY A BROAD TROUGH POSITIONED
OVER THE EASTERN UNITED STATES AND A RIDGE ALONG THE WEST COAST. A
SHORT WAVE TROUGH WAS ENTERING THE NORTHERN PLAINS FRIDAY
NIGHT...AND WILL CONTINUE TO SLIDE SOUTHEAST TOWARDS THE GREAT LAKES
REGION THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON. THIS WILL CAUSE A COLD FRONT TO
MOVE ACROSS THE CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN PLAINS. OVER THE INTERMOUNTAIN
WEST...HIGH PRESSURE WILL CONTINUE TO FAVOR NORTHEASTERLY WINDS
ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA...MAINTAINING A DRY LOW LEVEL AIRMASS.
ELSEWHERE...HIGH PRESSURE WILL SLIDE SOUTH AND EAST TOWARD THE
ATLANTIC AND GULF COASTS...RESULTING IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOUTHERLY
FLOW AND RECOVERING RH VALUES OVER THE SOUTHEASTERN STATES.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - PORTIONS OF SRN CA...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS...LOW RH

THE GENERAL SURFACE PATTERN IS EXPECTED TO CHANGE LITTLE ON
SATURDAY...WITH AN AREA OF HIGH PRESSURE SITUATED OVER THE
INTERMOUNTAIN WEST. THIS WILL CONTINUE TO PROMOTE DRY NORTHEASTERLY
FLOW ACROSS SRN CA...WITH ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES AND RH VALUES
REMAINING BELOW 20 PERCENT DURING THE AFTERNOON. THOUGH MODEL
GUIDANCE CONTINUES TO SHOW WEAKENING FLOW THROUGH A DEEP LAYER OF
THE ATMOSPHERE...LOCALLY HIGHER WINDS/GUSTS GREATER THAN 25 MPH WILL
BE POSSIBLE...SUGGESTING CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS WILL
   CONTINUE.

   ...SRN HIGH PLAINS...
MODEL GUIDANCE SHOWS A COLD FRONT WILL MOVE SOUTH ACROSS THE REGION
DURING SATURDAY MORNING...WITH GUSTY WINDS UP TO 25 MPH EXPECTED
AFTER THE FRONTAL PASSAGE. THOUGH RH VALUES WILL APPROACH 15
PERCENT...TEMPERATURES WILL REMAIN MARGINAL WITHIN A POST FRONTAL
COLD AIR ADVECTION REGIME. THEREFORE WILL NOT OUTLOOK A CRITICAL
AREA OVER THE REGION AT THIS TIME.

   ...PORTIONS OF THE SERN U.S....
LOW RH VALUES /25 TO 35 PERCENT/ ARE EXPECTED TO RESIDE ACROSS THE
REGION THROUGH SATURDAY MORNING. THIS AREA OF LOW RH WILL COINCIDE
WITH AN AXIS OF HIGH PRESSURE...THUS WINDS WILL BE WEAK. SOUTHERLY
WINDS WILL THEN STRENGTHEN ACROSS AL AND GA BY THE
AFTERNOON...RESULTING IN RECOVERING RH VALUES. THIS WILL PRECLUDE A
   CRITICAL OUTLOOK.

DAY 2 FIRE WEATHER OUTLOOK RESENT 1
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0348 AM CST SAT JAN 17 2009

   VALID 181200Z - 191200Z

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA FOR PORTIONS OF SRN CA...

   ...SYNOPSIS...
A HIGHLY AMPLIFIED UPPER LEVEL TROUGH WILL REMAIN SITUATED OVER THE
EASTERN HALF OF THE CONUS ON D2...WHILE A RIDGE BEGINS TO SHIFT EAST
INTO THE WESTERN U.S. SURFACE LOW PRESSURE IS FORECAST TO MOVE
ACROSS THE GREAT LAKES REGION THROUGH THE DAY...WITH A COLD FRONT
TRAILING SOUTH ACROSS THE SERN CONUS AND INTO THE GULF OF MEXICO.
MEANWHILE...HIGH PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO BE POSITIONED OVER THE
INTERMOUNTAIN WEST. THIS WILL AGAIN LEAD TO OFFSHORE FLOW AND
   WARM/DRY CONDITIONS OVER SRN CA.

...CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER AREA - PORTIONS OF SRN CA...

PRIMARY CONDITIONS: STRONG AND GUSTY WINDS...LOW RH

A PROLONGED PATTERN OF WARM...DRY...OFFSHORE FLOW WILL CONTINUE INTO
D2 OVER SRN CA. THOUGH AN UPPER LEVEL RIDGE WILL SHIFT EAST INTO THE
WESTERN CONUS /LEADING TO MORE OF AN EAST-SOUTHEASTERLY UPPER FLOW
REGIME/...SURFACE HIGH PRESSURE WILL REMAIN FAVORABLY CONFIGURED FOR
CONTINUED NORTHEASTERLY SURFACE FLOW. ABOVE NORMAL TEMPERATURES...RH
VALUES AOB 15 PERCENT...AND LOCALLY STRONG WINDS/GUSTS OVER THE
HIGHER TERRAIN NORTH OF THE LOS ANGELES BASIN WILL CONTINUE TO
   SUPPORT CRITICAL FIRE CONDITIONS.

   ...SRN HIGH PLAINS...
TEMPERATURES ARE EXPECTED TO WARM INTO THE 60S AND RH VALUES WILL
FALL INTO THE TEENS DURING SUNDAY AFTERNOON. FAVORABLY MIXED
BOUNDARY LAYER WILL PROMOTE GUSTY WINDS /20 TO 30 MPH/ INTO THE
EARLY AFTERNOON...BEFORE SUBSIDING SOMEWHAT BY MID TO LATE
AFTERNOON. THIS WILL RESULT IN SEVERAL HOURS OF OVERLAP BETWEEN LOW
RH AND STRONGER WINDS...LEADING TO AN ELEVATED FIRE THREAT.
