   MESOSCALE DISCUSSION 0043
NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   0239 PM CST WED JAN 29 2014

AREAS AFFECTED...PARTS OF THE FL PANHANDLE INTO SRN GA

   CONCERNING...WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION

   VALID 292039Z - 300145Z

SUMMARY...A NARROW BAND OF LIGHT WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION WILL
BECOME REINFORCED DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS AND PERSIST INTO THE
EVENING HOURS. THE PRIMARY PRECIP TYPES ARE EXPECTED TO BE LIGHT
   SLEET AND LIGHT FREEZING RAIN.

DISCUSSION...RECENT MOISTURE-CHANNEL IMAGERY HIGHLIGHTS THE WARM
CONVEYOR BELT OVER THE SERN STATES BECOMING LOCALLY ENHANCED IN
ADVANCE OF A DISORGANIZED IMPULSE CROSSING THE GULF WATERS S OF
COASTAL LA. CORRESPONDING ENHANCED WARM ADVECTION WILL ENCOURAGE THE
REINFORCEMENT OF A STEADY STREAM OF PRECIPITATION FROM FL ENEWD OFF
THE ATLANTIC COAST INCLUDING SRN GA DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS.
PRECIPITATION RATES OF 0.01-0.03 INCH PER HOUR WILL ACCOMPANY THIS
   ACTIVITY.

A NARROW CORRIDOR OF THE AFOREMENTIONED PRECIPITATION WILL OVERLAP
WITH SUB-FREEZING SFC TEMPERATURES TO SUPPORT LIGHT WINTER MIXED
PRECIPITATION FROM THE TALLAHASSEE AREA ENEWD ACROSS PARTS OF
S-CNTRL GA TOWARD THE SERN GA COASTAL PLAIN. THE 18Z SPECIAL RAOB
FROM TLH HIGHLIGHTS THE ELEVATED WARM LAYER FEATURING TEMPERATURES
AROUND 3C AT H85 ABOVE A SFC-BASED FREEZING LAYER. SIMILAR THERMAL
PROFILES ACROSS THE MCD AREA WILL FOSTER MELTING OF DESCENDING
HYDROMETEORS...WITH PHASE CHANGES TO SLEET AND FREEZING RAIN IN THE
SFC LAYER. OBSERVATIONS FROM THE NSSL PRECIPITATION IDENTIFICATION
NEAR THE GROUND /PING/ PROJECT VALIDATES THIS MANIFESTATION OF THE
   THERMAL PROFILE.

WHILE SOME AREAS OF COASTAL SERN GA ARE CURRENTLY EXPERIENCING
ABOVE-FREEZING SFC TEMPERATURES...WEAK COLD ADVECTION IN THIS REGION
AND SUB-CLOUD EVAPORATIONAL COOLING SHOULD ALLOW SFC TEMPERATURES TO
FALL BELOW FREEZING DURING THE NEXT FEW HOURS AND SUPPORT LIGHT
   WINTER MIXED PRECIPITATION.
