   Mesoscale Discussion 1779
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0354 PM CST Mon Dec 04 2017

Areas affected...portions of eastern ND...northwest/west-central MN
   and northeast SD

   Concerning...Blizzard

   Valid 042154Z - 050200Z

SUMMARY...Heavy snow, with rates of one inch/hour will progress from
west to east across the discussion area through this evening.
Strong surface wind gusts of 40-50 mph will combine with with the
snow to result in areas experiencing blizzard conditions.

DISCUSSION...at 21Z an intensifying surface low was located along
the MN-WI border northeast of MSP, while an upper-level shortwave
trough was located over central NE/SD. Regional radar imagery
depicts an area of moderate-heavy snow associated with a deformation
zone extending from northwest MN/eastern ND south into eastern SD.
Strong large-scale ascent associated with this deformation zone will
move east through this evening across the discussion area, and
short-term forecast soundings continue to show a favorable
environment for heavy snow with rates of around one inch/hour.
Strong surface winds with gusts of 40-50 mph will also continue and
develop east with time as the deepening surface low lifts northeast
tonight. As a result, areas of visibilities at or below 1/4-mile
can be expected, resulting in blizzard conditions.
