Mesoscale Discussion 1289
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0709 PM CDT Tue Jul 11 2017
Areas affected...eastern North Dakota through northwest Minnesota
Concerning...Tornado Watch 408...
Valid 120009Z - 120215Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 408 continues.
SUMMARY...Storms including supercells are expected to continue from
eastern North Dakota through northwest Minnesota next couple hours,
posing a threat for a few tornadoes, large hail and damaging wind.
DISCUSSION...Cluster of supercells that initiated along what appears
to be a cold front/dryline merger just south of surface low
continues from northeast ND into extreme northwest MN. Surface
analysis indicates a warm front extending from northeast ND
southeastward through western MN. Greater tornado threat next couple
hours is expected with storms that interact with this boundary where
low-level shear is maximized. More isolated development remains
possible farther south over southeast ND. Overall tornado threat
should begin to decrease by 03Z as the boundary layer stabilizes.
