   AREAS AFFECTED...SOUTHERN AND EASTERN MAINE

   CONCERNING...HEAVY SNOW 

   VALID 021246Z - 021645Z

   SUMMARY...A NARROW BAND OF HEAVY SNOW IS EXPECTED TO DEVELOP FROM
   THE WESTERN PORTIONS OF DOWN EAST MAINE...NNEWD DURING THE MORNING
   HOURS.  SNOW RATES SHOULD INCREASE TO AT LEAST ONE INCH PER HOUR.

   DISCUSSION...MULTIFACETED UPPER LOW IS MATURING OFF THE SRN NEW
   ENGLAND COAST AND FURTHER DEEPENING IS EXPECTED AS LOW PRESSURE
   SYSTEM LIFTS TOWARD NOVA SCOTIA.  LATEST SATELLITE/RADAR IMAGERY
   SUGGEST DEFORMATION ZONE IS BEGINNING TO ESTABLISH ITSELF ORIENTED
   ALONG AN AXIS FROM CAPE COD...NNEWD INTO DOWN EAST MAINE WHERE SNOW
   RATES ARE BEGINNING TO INCREASE.  LATEST SHORT-RANGE GUIDANCE
   SUGGEST MUCH OF WASHINGTON COUNTY...CERTAINLY NEAR THE
   COAST...SHOULD STRUGGLE TO SWITCH TO SNOW THROUGH MID AFTERNOON. 
   HOWEVER JUST WEST OF THIS AREA...A FAIRLY NARROW BAND OF HEAVY
   SNOW...ROUGHLY 50 MI WIDE...SHOULD ESTABLISH ITSELF FROM LINCOLN
   COUNTY...THROUGH PENOBSCOT INTO EASTERN AROOSTOOK COUNTY.  MDT SNOW
   HAS RECENTLY DEVELOPED AT BGR AND HEAVY SNOW SHOULD BE COMMON ALONG
   THIS CORRIDOR WITHIN A FEW HOURS.  ADDITIONALLY...WINDS MAY GUST TO
   NEAR 30KT CREATING CONSIDERABLE DRIFTING AND SOME BLOWING SNOW.
