   TORNADO WATCH NUMBER 246
   NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   545 PM EDT TUE MAY 5 2009
   
   THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A
   TORNADO WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF 
   
          NORTHERN NORTH CAROLINA
          CENTRAL AND EASTERN SOUTH CAROLINA
          COASTAL WATERS
   
   EFFECTIVE THIS TUESDAY AFTERNOON FROM 545 PM UNTIL MIDNIGHT EDT.
   
   TORNADOES...HAIL TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER...THUNDERSTORM WIND
   GUSTS TO 70 MPH...AND DANGEROUS LIGHTNING ARE POSSIBLE IN THESE
   AREAS.
   
   THE TORNADO WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 45 STATUTE
   MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 70 MILES SOUTHWEST OF
   CHARLOTTE NORTH CAROLINA TO 20 MILES SOUTHEAST OF ELIZABETH CITY
   NORTH CAROLINA.  FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE

   REMEMBER...A TORNADO WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE FAVORABLE FOR
   TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
   AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
   THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
   AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS.

   DISCUSSION...ISOLATED SEVERE/SUPERCELL THUNDERSTORMS ARE INCREASING
   FROM NORTHERN SC INTO CENTRAL AND EASTERN NC...IN REGION OF MODERATE
   INSTABILITY AND FAVORABLE VERTICAL SHEAR.  THREAT MAY PERSIST FOR
   ANOTHER 2-3 HOURS BEFORE SHORTWAVE TROUGH DEPARTS AREA AND DAYTIME
   HEATING SUBSIDES.
   
   AVIATION...TORNADOES AND A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL
   SURFACE AND ALOFT TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE
   WIND GUSTS TO 60 KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO
