   SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 457
   NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   305 PM CDT SAT AUG 9 2014

   THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A

   * SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF 
     PART OF EASTERN COLORADO
     NORTHWEST AND NORTH CENTRAL KANSAS
     CENTRAL NEBRASKA

   * EFFECTIVE THIS SATURDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 305 PM UNTIL
     1000 PM CDT.

   * PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE...
     SCATTERED LARGE HAIL AND ISOLATED VERY LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 2
       INCHES IN DIAMETER POSSIBLE
     SCATTERED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH POSSIBLE

   THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 105
   STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 55 MILES NORTHEAST OF
   MULLEN NEBRASKA TO 25 MILES SOUTHWEST OF HILL CITY KANSAS.  FOR A

   PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

   REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
   FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
   AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
   THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
   AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
   DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

   DISCUSSION...THUNDERSTORMS ARE DEVELOPING ALONG SEVERAL SURFACE
   BOUNDARIES IN AN ENVIRONMENT WITH MLCAPE AOA 2000 J/KG AND MODEST
   DEEP-LAYER SHEAR OF 20-30 KT.  THE NET RESULT SHOULD BE ORGANIZED
   MULTICELLS CAPABLE OF PRODUCING LARGE HAIL INITIALLY...WHILE THE
   DAMAGING WIND RISK WILL INCREASE AS STORMS MERGE AND GROW UPSCALE
   INTO ONE OR MORE CLUSTERS.

   AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
   TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
   KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 550. MEAN STORM
   MOTION VECTOR 32025.
