   SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 461
   NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   1230 PM MDT FRI AUG 15 2014

   THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A

   * SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF 
     WESTERN AND CENTRAL MONTANA

   * EFFECTIVE THIS FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM 1230 PM UNTIL
     800 PM MDT.

   * PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE...
     SCATTERED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH POSSIBLE
     ISOLATED LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 1.5 INCHES IN DIAMETER POSSIBLE

   THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 60
   STATUTE MILES EAST AND WEST OF A LINE FROM 50 MILES EAST
   NORTHEAST OF CUT BANK MONTANA TO 40 MILES EAST OF BUTTE MONTANA.

   PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

   REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
   FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
   AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
   THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
   AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
   DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

   DISCUSSION...STORMS ARE INCREASING OVER WRN MT ALONG THE LEADING
   EDGE OF LARGE SCALE ASCENT IN ADVANCE OF AN UPPER LOW MOVING ACROSS
   THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST.  STRONG HEATING AND ATTENDANT
   DESTABILIZATION/STEEPENING OF LOW-LEVEL LAPSE RATES WILL ENHANCE
   SEVERE STORM POTENTIAL AS MLCAPE REACHES 1500-2000 J/KG THIS
   AFTERNOON.  EFFECTIVE BULK SHEAR OF 30-35 KT WILL SUPPORT ORGANIZED
   CONVECTIVE STRUCTURES/ISOLATED SUPERCELLS WITH STRONGER STORMS
   CAPABLE OF PRODUCING DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND OCCASIONAL HAIL. 
   ACTIVITY WILL SPREAD NEWD THROUGH THE EVENING HOURS.

   AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
   TO 1.5 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
   KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 450. MEAN STORM
   MOTION VECTOR 22025.
