   SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH NUMBER 524
   NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER NORMAN OK
   520 PM CDT THU OCT 9 2014

   THE NWS STORM PREDICTION CENTER HAS ISSUED A

   * SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH FOR PORTIONS OF 
     FAR NORTHEAST NEW MEXICO
     FAR NORTHWEST OKLAHOMA INCLUDING THE PANHANDLE
     TEXAS PANHANDLE

   * EFFECTIVE THIS THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND FRIDAY MORNING FROM 520
     PM UNTIL 100 AM CDT.

   * PRIMARY THREATS INCLUDE...
     ISOLATED VERY LARGE HAIL EVENTS TO 2 INCHES IN DIAMETER POSSIBLE
     ISOLATED DAMAGING WIND GUSTS TO 70 MPH POSSIBLE

   THE SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH AREA IS APPROXIMATELY ALONG AND 60
   STATUTE MILES NORTH AND SOUTH OF A LINE FROM 40 MILES SOUTHWEST
   OF CLAYTON NEW MEXICO TO 25 MILES SOUTHEAST OF GAGE OKLAHOMA. 
   FOR A COMPLETE DEPICTION OF THE WATCH SEE THE ASSOCIATED WATCH

   PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

   REMEMBER...A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH MEANS CONDITIONS ARE
   FAVORABLE FOR SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN AND CLOSE TO THE WATCH
   AREA. PERSONS IN THESE AREAS SHOULD BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR
   THREATENING WEATHER CONDITIONS AND LISTEN FOR LATER STATEMENTS
   AND POSSIBLE WARNINGS. SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS CAN AND OCCASIONALLY
   DO PRODUCE TORNADOES.

   DISCUSSION...THUNDERSTORMS ARE EXPECTED TO INCREASE IN COVERAGE AND
   INTENSITY FROM WEST TO EAST ACROSS THE WATCH AREA LATE THIS
   AFTERNOON INTO EVENING AS LARGE-SCALE FORCING FOR ASCENT IS ENHANCED
   BY A SHORT-WAVE TROUGH MOVING OUT OF THE SOUTHERN ROCKIES. THE
   COMBINATION OF MODERATE AMOUNTS OF VERTICAL SHEAR AND INSTABILITY
   WILL BE SUPPORTIVE OF SEVERE STORMS INCLUDING SUPERCELLS CAPABLE OF
   DAMAGING WIND GUSTS AND LARGE HAIL.

   AVIATION...A FEW SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL SURFACE AND ALOFT
   TO 2 INCHES. EXTREME TURBULENCE AND SURFACE WIND GUSTS TO 60
   KNOTS. A FEW CUMULONIMBI WITH MAXIMUM TOPS TO 400. MEAN STORM
   MOTION VECTOR 25020.
