Mesoscale Discussion 0575
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0524 PM CDT Tue May 07 2019
Areas affected...western Oklahoma
Concerning...Severe potential...Tornado Watch likely
Valid 072224Z - 072330Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...95 percent
SUMMARY...Western Oklahoma is being monitored for thunderstorm
initiation. Supercells capable of tornadoes and large hail will be
the initial primary threats. A tornado watch will likely be needed
soon.
DISCUSSION...Early this evening, visible imagery shows a band of
deepening cumulus along what appears to be a confluence boundary.
With temperatures in the upper 70s to near 80, the surface layer is
only weakly capped, and discrete storms will probably develop soon
within the moderately unstable warm sector. VWP data show only
modest vertical wind profiles, but both deep shear and size of
low-level hodographs will increase during the early evening as the
low-level jet strengthens in advance of an approaching mid-level
jet.
