   Mesoscale Discussion 0005
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0749 AM CST Tue Jan 07 2020

Areas affected...eastern WV into western VA and western MD

   Concerning...Heavy snow

   Valid 071349Z - 071815Z

SUMMARY...Occasional heavy snow rates of 1 to 1.5 inches per hour
are likely from eastern West Virginia into western
   Virginia/Maryland.

DISCUSSION...A compact but strong and progressive shortwave trough
will move toward the area today, providing strong cooling aloft and
drawing ample moisture northward ahead of a surface low. The low
will move generally eastward across VA, while a warm conveyor brings
moisture north and west around the low.

Forecast soundings show snow profiles across the higher terrain of
VA, WV and western MD today, where strong lift will persist for
several hours. Recent observations show 4-star snow along the WV/VA
border, and additional heavy snow rates are likely to develop
northeastward through midday, eventually reaching the western MD
Panhandle. In addition, cooling aloft may result in small elevated
MUCAPE values, adding to heavy snow burst potential.
