Mesoscale Discussion 0031
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0734 AM CST Sat Jan 11 2020
Areas affected...parts of north-central TX...far southern OK
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 111334Z - 111530Z
SUMMARY...A quick burst of heavy snow with rates around 1 inch per
hour is expected through 930am CST over the I-35 corridor in the
northern exurbia of the DFW Metroplex and also into far southern OK.
DISCUSSION...Radar imagery and surface observations as of 725am CST
indicate heavy snow west of the I-35 corridor north of the DFW
Metroplex. Surface observations show temperatures in the low to mid
30s degrees F east of the heavy snow but strong low-level cold
advection will likely facilitate temperatures falling to freezing
during the next 1-2 hours.
The 12z FWD sounding showed a mid-level layer between 700-500 mb
supporting around 200 J/kg MUCAPE. A few lightning flashes have
been detected with the weak convection as it has moved east this
morning between Wichita Falls and Denton. As a result, a quick
convective burst of snow/sleet is anticipated. As the mid-level
trough and strong mid to upper forcing for ascent gradually shifts
east this morning to northeast TX/southeast OK, the precipitation
will diminish from west to east.
