Mesoscale Discussion 0046
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0536 PM CST Sat Jan 11 2020
Areas affected...portions of central and northeast GA into upstate
SC...western NC...northeast TN...western VA and southern WV
Concerning...Tornado Watch 15...17...
Valid 112336Z - 120100Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 15, 17 continues.
SUMMARY...Damaging wind gusts and a tornado or two remain possible
across WW 15 and 17. An isolated severe threat may extend north of
WW 17 into parts of western VA and southern WV.
DISCUSSION...The QLCS currently extending from far northeast
TN/western NC south/southwest across central GA continues to produce
near-severe measured gusts generally ranging from around 40 kt to 55
kt. Additionally, a few embedded supercells and/or mesovortex
circulations have been noted over the last hour. As the line
continues east/northeast around 40-50 kt, damaging wind gusts will
remain possible across the remainder of WW 15 and 17, given intense
low level winds and MLCAPE as high as 500 J/kg extending across much
of GA into SC.
At least a few hundred J/kg MLCAPE extends further north into
western NC/VA. Given the strength of low level flow and stronger
forcing lifting northeast toward the central Appalachians, a few
severe gusts could persist north of ww 17 into parts of western
VA/southern WV. Trends will be monitored across this area for
possible watch issuance.
