Mesoscale Discussion 0051
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0132 AM CST Sun Jan 12 2020
Areas affected...far northern New York and northwest Vermont
Concerning...Freezing rain
Valid 120732Z - 121230Z
SUMMARY...Freezing rain will continue across far northern New York
and northwest Vermont into the early morning. Heavy freezing rain in
excess of 0.1 inch/hour is possible.
DISCUSSION...Freezing rain has developed in the last 1-2 hours
across northern New York and northwest Vermont. Warm air advection
ahead of an approaching upper-level shortwave trough has led to
isentropic ascent with strong frontogenetical forcing also occurring
along the US-Canadian border from New York through New England. A
warm nose continues to persist owing in large part to the warm air
advection. However, the surface cold front has slid slowly southward
tonight with surface temperatures in the upper 20s/low 30s F
currently and likely to fall into the mid/upper 20s F by sunrise. As
such, freezing rain, which may be heavy at times, will likely
continue until 11-13z across northern New York and northwest
Vermont.
