Mesoscale Discussion 0056
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0336 PM CST Thu Jan 16 2020
Areas affected...portions of central and western OK into the eastern
TX Panhandle
Concerning...Freezing rain
Valid 162136Z - 170330Z
SUMMARY...Areas of light freezing rain are expected across parts of
central into western OK and the eastern TX Panhandle into early
evening. Ice accumulation should remain light and mainly over
elevated surfaces.
DISCUSSION...Warm advection atop a shallow near-surface cold layer
is resulting in areas of light rain and freezing rain across parts
of southwestern OK into the eastern TX Panhandle as of 2130z.
Surface temperatures generally range from around 32-34 degrees from
near the OKC Metro south of I-40 and west of I-44, with colder
temperatures north of the I-40 corridor across northwest OK into the
TX Panhandle. Wet-bulb zero temperatures are however below freezing
across the MCD area. As precipitation spreads northward and
increases, areas near to just-above freezing should cool and rain
will change to freezing rain.
Above-normal high temperatures across the region in prior days have
largely led to road surface temperatures above freezing. As a
result, any ice accumulation should remain on elevated surfaces,
such as bridges and overpasses. Precipitation is expected to
increase and spread northward into this evening, however, the strong
warm advection regime should maintain temperatures hovering in the
30-33 degree range, keeping ice accumulation patchy and light.
