Mesoscale Discussion 0084
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0943 PM CST Wed Feb 05 2020
Areas affected...parts of southeast Louisiana into central
Mississippi
Concerning...Tornado Watch 24...
Valid 060343Z - 060545Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 24 continues.
SUMMARY...Strong storms may persist in the vicinity of the cold
front, with marginal hail and wind possible. A tornado threat cannot
be ruled out over time, along and east of the front.
DISCUSSION...In the wake of the earlier warm-advection storms,
southerly low-level winds continue to support a moist, unstable air
mass with upper 60s F dewpoints. Storms have gradually become
stronger along the front, with deep-layer shear nearly parallel to
it. Meanwhile, temperatures aloft continue to cool as the upper
trough nears.
In the near-term, marginally severe hail is possible with cells near
or even behind the cold front. Some of the larger cells may
eventually pose a localized damaging wind threat should they
transition into small bows. Low-level shear remains strong, mainly
from east-central MS into AL. Cells upstream of this region will
need to be monitored for supercell characteristics, and watch
re-issuance could be needed should this occur.
