Mesoscale Discussion 0090
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1000 AM CST Thu Feb 06 2020
Areas affected...southeast Alabama...west central through southwest
Georgia and the western Florida Panhandle
Concerning...Tornado Watch 26...
Valid 061600Z - 061800Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 26 continues.
SUMMARY...Thunderstorms will continue to pose a threat for damaging
wind and isolated tornadoes into the afternoon from southeast AL,
southwest GA and the western FL Panhandle.
DISCUSSION...A broken band of storms persists from west central GA,
southeast AL into the western FL Panhandle. Occasional bowing
segments and some supercell structures continue to be observed.
Modest instability will persist in the warm sector with 800-1200
J/kg MLCAPE, but the widespread clouds and weak mid-level lapse
rates will maintain a somewhat marginal overall thermodynamic
environment. The low-level jet has strengthened to 60 kt with VWP
data indicating large low-level hodographs (0-1 km storm relative
helicity from 300-400 m2/s2) along with 50+ kt effective bulk shear.
Discrete storms are also developing ahead of the line from southeast
AL into southwest GA. Further destabilization of the boundary layer
will be supported by modest low-level theta-e advection, but will be
mitigated by the lack of diabatic heating. This suggests the
discrete convection will be slow to mature, but some of this
activity may evolve into supercells which would increase the risk
for tornadoes.
