Mesoscale Discussion 0221
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0226 PM CDT Mon Mar 23 2020
Areas affected...Portions of New England
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 231926Z - 240130Z
SUMMARY...Snowfall rates of near 1 inch per hour are possible this
afternoon through perhaps mid-evening. Heaviest snowfall is expected
to occur during 8 PM EDT to 11 PM EDT period.
DISCUSSION...An approaching mid-level trough has induced a deepening
frontal wave cyclone along a remnant cold frontal boundary off the
Mid-Atlantic coast. Pressure falls of 4-5 mb over the last 2 hours
have been observed off the NJ/Long Island coasts indicating that the
surface low is in the process of shifting to the north and
deepening. During the afternoon, strong mid-level ascent will
overlap with strong 850 mb WAA across parts of New England. A
deformation band within central/eastern New York will eventually
merge with ongoing WAA precipitation within southern/central New
England. Snowfall rates of near 1 inch per hour will be possible
into early to mid-evening. The southern extent of higher snowfall
rates is where the most uncertainty lies as strong low-level WAA
will tend to warm the profile and transition precipitation to rain.
Some areas will remain above freezing until wet bulb effect will
drop temperatures to at or just below freezing.
