Mesoscale Discussion 0222
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0833 PM CDT Mon Mar 23 2020
Areas affected...Southern into central Maine
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 240133Z - 240430Z
SUMMARY...Heavy snow possible over the next couple of hours, with up
to 1 inch/hr rates possible. Heavy snow is expected to gradually
subside by 06Z.
DISCUSSION...A belt of 925-850 mb warm advection continues to
transport moisture to portions of northern New England in advance of
a 1010 mb low and associated mid-level shortwave trough currently
traversing the Mid-Atlantic region. Deep-layer lift of this
saturated, sub-freezing low-level airmass (per GYX 00Z sounding)
will promote efficient dendrite production, especially given the 700
mb frontogenesis in place.
The latest runs of the HRRR, as well as 21Z SREF and 12Z HREF
guidance all depict a gradual decreasing trend in heavy snowfall by
06Z, where the main low-level WAA/moist axis will translate to the
northeast, towards Nova Scotia.
