Mesoscale Discussion 0278
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0340 PM CDT Tue Mar 31 2020
Areas affected...far southeastern GA and adjacent northern FL
Concerning...Tornado Watch 78...
Valid 312040Z - 312145Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 78 continues.
SUMMARY...Risk for locally damaging winds and a couple of tornadoes
continues across valid portions of the watch, with greatest risk
apparent over northwestern Florida at this time.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows storms becoming a bit more
organized over the past hour or so -- particularly over northern
Florida and adjacent southeastern Georgia. In particular, WSR-88D
VWP data indicated two tornadoes in Madison County at one point in
the past 15 minutes -- one over central portions of the county and
one to the south.
This portion of the convective band appears to be moving through a
maximized area of low-level moisture (low 70s dewpoints) and
correspondingly greater CAPE (an axis of 1000 J/kg mixed-layer CAPE
per the most recent RUC-based surface OA data). Though low-level
flow has becoming increasingly veered/west-southwesterly ahead of
the storms, ample low-level shear persists -- suggestive that
tornado risk will persist over the next hour.
