Mesoscale Discussion 0286
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0859 PM CDT Fri Apr 03 2020
Areas affected...Parts of Deep South Texas
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 80...
Valid 040159Z - 040330Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 80
continues.
SUMMARY...Scattered strong storms may linger across parts of Deep
South Texas beyond 10 PM CDT, accompanied by at least some risk for
severe hail and locally strong surface gusts. This threat seems
limited enough that a new severe weather watch is not anticipated,
but it is possible that portions of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 80
could be locally extended in time for an hour or two.
DISCUSSION...The surface cold front has advanced through the San
Antonio area, and will continue southeastward and southward into the
middle Texas coastal plain and through the Laredo vicinity of the
lower Rio Grande Valley during the next few hours. Ahead of the
front, the environment remains moist with moderately large potential
instability. However, it appears that mid-level capping may hold
firm around the Brownsville area, and low-level forcing for ascent
hasn't been sufficient to contribute to substantive upscale
convective growth to this point.
It is possible that ongoing scattered vigorous thunderstorm activity
may linger another couple of hours, generally focused along the
mid-level (around 700 mb) thermal gradient across the Corpus Christi
county warning area, which appears to mark the northern edge of the
stronger capping. While some of this may at least attempt to
develop south of the current severe thunderstorm watch, severe
weather potential appears limited enough that a new watch is not
anticipated.
