Mesoscale Discussion 0305
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0217 AM CDT Wed Apr 08 2020
Areas affected...Portions of southern OH and northern/central WV
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 85...
Valid 080716Z - 080845Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 85
continues.
SUMMARY...Isolated severe threat continues across remaining valid
portions of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 85. Damaging winds and large
hail remain the primary threats.
DISCUSSION...A convective line extending east/west across parts of
southern OH has become oriented largely parallel to the mean
westerly mid-level flow, which has limited its recent southward
movement. Regardless, steep mid-level lapse rates noted on the 00Z
ILN sounding remain over southern OH into portions of central WV.
This is supporting MUCAPE of 1000-1500 J/kg, which is more than
enough to maintain the ongoing storms for at least the next couple
of hours. Isolated strong to damaging winds will likely remain the
primary threat given the linear storm mode. But, a couple instances
of large hail cannot be ruled out, particularly over parts of
southern OH where stronger updraft cores embedded within the line
have developed. Depending on convective trends, a small southward
expansion of Severe Thunderstorm Watch 85 may be warranted within
the next hour or so across parts of far southern OH and central WV.
