Mesoscale Discussion 0312
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0305 PM CDT Wed Apr 08 2020
Areas affected...eastern KY into western and south-central VA and
far north-central NC
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 87...
Valid 082005Z - 082130Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 87
continues.
SUMMARY...Strong to severe storms capable of producing hail and wind
damage will continue to spread southeast across WW 87 through early
evening.
DISCUSSION...Strong to severe thunderstorms continue this afternoon
ahead of a cold front slowly shifting southward across the
mid-Atlantic/central Appalachians. Several severe hail (up to 1.75")
and wind damage reports have been noted across WW 87. These clusters
of storms should continue to track east/southeast into early evening
with a continued threat for periodic hail and damaging wind gusts.
Downstream across south-central VA and north-central NC, the
boundary layer has recovered from the earlier influence of an
outflow boundary that surged southward across much of NC earlier
this morning. Strong heating has allowed temperatures to climb into
the upper 70s and low 80s F with dewpoints climbing back into the
low to mid 50s F. As a result, weak destabilization has spread
eastward across the area and deepening CU has been noted on visible
satellite imagery. Additional storms could develop across this area
over the next few hours, or, convection across western VA could
persist as it tracks southeastward into the area. This could require
a local watch extension by WFO RNK (Blacksburg VA).
