   Mesoscale Discussion 0352
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   1238 PM CDT Sun Apr 12 2020

Areas affected...Portions of southeast Minnesota and northwest
   Wisconsin

   Concerning...Heavy snow

   Valid 121738Z - 122045Z

SUMMARY...Moderate to heavy snow is expected to continue through the
afternoon across portions of the Upper Midwest. Snowfall rates of 1
to 1.5 inches per hour are expected.

DISCUSSION...A 996 mb surface low is analyzed southeast of Kansas
City, MO at 17Z with a warm front extending northeastward to near
Madison, WI. Strong northerly surface winds 20 to 30 knots are
supplying a continuous supply of cold air northwest of this cold
front. This has proven sufficiently cold for heavy snow across
portions of Nebraska and northwest Iowa this morning. The area of
strong frontogenesis responsible for this heavy snow has started to
shift northeastward across southeast Minnesota and northwest
Wisconsin with a subsequent increase in snowfall rates. These rates
will continue to increase through the afternoon as frontogenesis
   strengthens.

Snowfall rates are expected to be mostly around 1 inch per hour.
Localized rates near 2 inches per hour are possible under the
heaviest bands, but near freezing surface temperatures and
relatively warm spring soil temperatures will likely limit the
   accumulation rate somewhat.

Heavier snowfall rates are expected to shift northeastward into
northeast Wisconsin and the western UP of Michigan after 00Z.
