Mesoscale Discussion 0380
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0856 AM CDT Mon Apr 13 2020
Areas affected...eastern NC
Concerning...Tornado Watch 118...
Valid 131356Z - 131500Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 118 continues.
SUMMARY...Localized swaths of wind damage will probably accompany
the pronounced bowing segments as the mature squall line moves east
across eastern NC. A tornado or two remains possible near the
immediate coast where slightly greater instability resides.
DISCUSSION...Radar imagery as of 1355z shows a strong squall line
with embedded bowing segments/lewps quickly moving east across
eastern NC. The 12z MHX observed sounding show around 100 J/kg
MLCAPE but nearly 50 kt of surface-1km shear. Given the marginal
buoyancy/very strong shear setup, expecting the squall line to
continue to pose a risk for localized swaths of damaging gusts near
inflections/bowing segments in the QLCS and a tornado risk,
especially near the coast where slightly higher buoyancy is located.
