Areas affected...Portions of the Mid-Atlantic
Concerning...Tornado Watch 119...
Valid 131720Z - 131845Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 119 continues.
SUMMARY...The severe weather threat continues through the afternoon
across portions of the mid-Atlantic.
DISCUSSION...Storms have developed along a cold front currently
moving through far western Maryland, southern Pennsylvania, and
northern Virginia. These storms have already produced near severe
wind gusts of 44 kts in Hagerstown, MD. Temperatures have warmed
into the low 70s and dewpoints have increased into the mid 60s F. At
least partial clearing ahead of these storms should promote further
destabilization with MLCAPE increasing to around 1000 J/kg in the
next 1 to 2 hours. Therefore, damaging straight line winds appear
likely in a swath across Maryland and southern Pennsylvania and
eventually into New Jersey and Delaware with these storms along the
cold front.
In addition, cells have developed ahead of the front across eastern
Maryland, and southeast Pennslylvania. These storms will pose the
best threat for a few tornadoes given the better storm mode
(mini-supercell), and stronger low-level jet per DOX/DIX VWP. This
low-level jet is expected to shift eastward by later this afternoon.
This weakening, in addition to low-level veering, should lead to a
somewhat reduced tornado threat when the line of storms along the
cold front arrives. However, a QLCS tornado or two cannot be ruled
out.
