Mesoscale Discussion 0384
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0203 PM CDT Mon Apr 13 2020
Areas affected...eastern MD...DE...southern NJ
Concerning...Tornado Watch 119...
Valid 131903Z - 132030Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 119 continues.
SUMMARY...Pockets of strong to severe gusts 50-65 mph gusts will be
capable of scattered wind damage through 430pm EDT.
DISCUSSION...Radar imagery shows a vigorous thunderstorm band over
the northern Chesapeake Bay vicinity. KBWI recently recorded an
observed severe gust of 61mph at 237pm EDT. The boundary layer has
destabilized over the DelMarVa with surface temperatures warming
into the upper 60s to lower 70s F. The relatively cool marine
influence has limited temperatures to the lower 60s across southern
NJ. Given the steeper 0-2 km lapse rates where temperatures are
warmer, it seems the risk for severe gusts (60-65 mph) is highest
across MD/DE. Nonetheless, the risk for strong gusts will probably
include southern NJ with strong horizontal momentum transport
protruding through a less-unstable near-surface layer.
