Mesoscale Discussion 0393
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0917 PM CDT Thu Apr 16 2020
Areas affected...southeast Nebraska
Concerning...Heavy snow
Valid 170217Z - 170515Z
SUMMARY...A developing snow band across southeast Nebraska may bring
periods of heavy snow with snowfall rates between 1-2 inches per
hour over the next 1-3 hours.
DISCUSSION...Recent radar trends show a strengthening snow band
across southeast NE that is associated with continued frontogenesis
and deformation/confluence within the 850-700 mb layer. ASOS surface
observations from the region show visibility dropping to below one
mile with moderate snow reported, suggesting that this band is
producing at least pockets of heavy snow rates. Snowfall rates of
1-2 inches per hour will continue to be possible over the next 1-3
hours as this band translates to the east in tandem with the main
mid level trough axis. However, as the low-mid level baroclinic zone
and frontogenetical forcing for ascent become increasingly displaced
to the south, the band will primarily be driven by relatively weak
mid level deformation along the trough axis. As such, a gradual
weakening is expected as the band moves towards the IA border.
