Mesoscale Discussion 0396
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1210 PM CDT Sat Apr 18 2020
Areas affected...portions of the FL east coast
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch possible
Valid 181710Z - 181815Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...40 percent
SUMMARY...A couple of strong to locally severe thunderstorms are
possible this afternoon near the coast.
DISCUSSION...Radar/satellite mosaic shows a band of thunderstorms
draped across central FL gradually moving east-southeastward toward
the Lake Okeechobee vicinity. Convection is developing over the
northern part of the Everglades where temperatures have warmed into
the upper 80s to lower 90s. KAMX VAD data shows weak flow in the
lowest 3 km AGL (at or below 15 kt) but high-level flow will be more
than adequate for updraft venting/maintenance as storms gradually
intensify this afternoon. A few wet microbursts (gusts 40-60 mph),
aided by steep 0-3 km lapse rates (in excess of 8 deg C/km), in
addition to marginally severe hail, may accompany the strongest
storms.
