Mesoscale Discussion 0427
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0527 PM CDT Tue Apr 21 2020
Areas affected...Texas Panhandle...Oklahoma Panhandle...western
Oklahoma.
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 129...
Valid 212227Z - 220000Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 129
continues.
SUMMARY...The severe weather threat for weather watch 129 continues.
Strong winds and large hail are the main threats through this
evening.
DISCUSSION...Scattered thunderstorms have developed across the Texas
and Oklahoma Panhandles late this afternoon underneath a shortwave
trough. Mesoanalysis indicates the storms are ongoing in an
environment characterized by MLCAPE of 500-1000 J/kg and 50-60 kt of
effective bulk shear. While still high based due to surface
temperature dewpoint spreads of 25-30 F, these storms should
continue to pose a threat for strong damaging wind gusts and large
hail. Hi-res forecast guidance shows storms will continue to develop
and move east southeast along the warm front corridor into western
Oklahoma where the environment remains favorable for severe weather.
A conditional, more isolated threat exists along the dryline where
cumulus have become more agitated over the last hour. Some hi-res
members show storm development in this corridor where surface
moisture and instability are higher.
