Mesoscale Discussion 0433
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0121 AM CDT Wed Apr 22 2020
Areas affected...portions of southern OK and extreme
north-central/northeast TX
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 130...
Valid 220621Z - 220745Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 130
continues.
SUMMARY...Strong to severe thunderstorms will continue across parts
of south-central OK, eastward along the Red River Valley the next
few hours. The main threat with these storms will be large hail and
locally strong wind gusts.
DISCUSSION...Strong to severe thunderstorms continue to track
east/southeast at around 40 kt across south-central OK as of 06z.
These storms are tracking through an environment characterized by
around 500-1000 J/kg MLCAPE, and are likely elevated, or becoming
increasingly elevated with eastward extent. Regional VWPs indicated
strong shear favorable for continued organized convection,
especially given the presence of steep midlevel lapse rates between
7.5-8 C/km per 00z regional RAOBs. However, instability wanes with
eastward extent and the 850mb south/southwesterly low level jet
decreases toward the ArkLaTex vicinity. As such, strong to severe
thunderstorms may continue for several more hours and a local watch
extension and/or a new small downstream severe thunderstorm watch
may be needed.
