Mesoscale Discussion 0454
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
1116 PM CDT Wed Apr 22 2020
Areas affected...Central LA...Southwest MS
Concerning...Tornado Watch 135...137...
Valid 230416Z - 230545Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 135, 137 continues.
SUMMARY...Environment will remain supportive of supercells capable
of all severe hazards, including tornadoes, for the next several
hours. A new Tornado Watch will likely be needed too cover this
continued threat across central LA.
DISCUSSION...Low-level moisture continues to advect northward into
central LA and southwest MS. Current surface observations show 70
deg F dewpoints into central LA and as far north as HZR in
northwestern southeast LA. Despite some modest nocturnal cooling,
moderate instability persists within this moist air mass with
several supercells currently ongoing. Strong low-level and
deep-layer vertical is also in place. KPOE VAD recently sampled 50
kt around 1 km amidst strong low-level veering and 70 kt of 0-6 km
bulk shear.
Pair of supercells in central LA continue to show severe potential.
Newer development across southwest LA has also intensified quickly
and will likely pose a downstream severe threat. Given the current
radar trends and the persistence of favorable environment, the
tornado threat will likely extend past the 05Z expiration time of
Tornado Watch 135. A new Tornado Watch will likely be needed across
portions of central LA to cover this threat.
