Mesoscale Discussion 0507
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0358 PM CDT Thu Apr 30 2020
Areas affected...portions of the intermountain west
Concerning...Severe potential...Watch unlikely
Valid 302058Z - 302230Z
Probability of Watch Issuance...20 percent
SUMMARY...Widely scattered strong to severe thunderstorms across
portions of Idaho and northern Utah will be capable of damaging
wind gusts and some severe hail through the afternoon and early
evening.
DISCUSSION...A few strong to severe storms have matured across Idaho
this afternoon owing to lift and shear from an impinging shortwave
trough and mid-level jet over the Great Basin. MLCAPE of 500 J/kg
and steep low-level lapse rates will continue to support isolated
severe weather for the next few hours.
Stronger cells have formed near BOI along the Snake River Valley rim
and are expected to push east northeast. KCBX shows enhanced
velocities along the leading edge of these cells and some severe
wind gusts owing to downward momentum transfer from the mid-level
jet and dry sub-cloud layers, will be possible.
Further to the south and east storms have exhibited supercellular
characteristics near Pocatello. Strong wind gusts from higher LCLs
and occasional severe hail will be likely with these storms through
the early evening. Convection should gradually weaken this evening
with the loss of daytime heating and a weather watch is not
expected.
