Mesoscale Discussion 0544
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0608 PM CDT Tue May 05 2020
Areas affected...parts of northeast Georgia into northern South
Carolina and adjacent parts of North Carolina
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 168...
Valid 052308Z - 060115Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 168
continues.
SUMMARY...Severe potential -- including risk for a tornado --
continues across portions of WW 168. Greatest risk is evident over
northern South Carolina at this time.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows thunderstorms occurring in a
band from northern Georgia eastward into northern South Carolina.
The storms are occurring in the vicinity of a west-to-east wedge
front, with an axis of 1000 to 2000 J/kg mixed-layer CAPE aligned
roughly along this boundary. As such, the environment in/near WW
168 remains supportive of continued/vigorous storms.
The most substantial risk at this time is indicated across
north-central South Carolina. Here, a lone, well-organized
supercell is moving east-southeastward into/across Lancaster County.
With this storm moving roughly along the surface front -- through
an environment of maximized low-level vorticity -- this storm
remains capable of producing a tornado, along with very large hail
and damaging winds.
Elsewhere, hail and gusty/damaging winds remain possible, and would
increase locally if another storm becomes oriented along the surface
boundary -- or along remnant outflow southwest of the aforementioned
supercell.
