Mesoscale Discussion 0548
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0457 PM CDT Thu May 07 2020
Areas affected...Southeast TX Panhandle...western north
TX...southwest OK
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 170...
Valid 072157Z - 072300Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 170
continues.
SUMMARY...An intense supercell or two will likely develop in the
Childress vicinity and spread east-southeast. A swath of large to
very large hail appears likely and an upgrade to an Enhanced Risk
for severe storms has occurred.
DISCUSSION...Storm initiation is underway near Childress within an
environment highly favorable for mid-level updraft rotation. Within
a plume of low 60s surface dew points, these higher-based storms
should quickly become supercells. Around a 100-mile wide corridor of
weaker MLCIN should support a 3-4 hour duration of potentially
strong supercell activity. Recent WoFS-NSSL output has been
consistent in indicating at least one longer-tracked supercell with
large 2-5 km UH into western north TX.
