Mesoscale Discussion 0556
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0230 AM CDT Fri May 08 2020
Areas affected...southeast Oklahoma and north Texas...east to the
Arklatex
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 173...
Valid 080730Z - 080930Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 173
continues.
SUMMARY...Risk for locally damaging winds and marginal hail is
expected to spread into areas downstream of existing WW 173. This
may require new WW issuance.
DISCUSSION...Latest radar loop shows a large bow continuing to
organize over south central and southeast Oklahoma, along the
northern fringe of an axis of 500 to 1500 J/kg mixed-layer CAPE
across central and north Texas. RUC-based objective analyses
indicate continued increases in capping into northeastern Texas --
i.e. downstream of the bow -- but the well-organized nature of the
convective band suggests that at least local/occasional gusts to
severe levels will remain possible as storms continue moving
east-southeastward at 50 kt.
Given the potential that at least local wind/hail risk will spread
out of the exist WW, a new watch may be required downstream, across
parts of northeastern Texas and into the Arklatex region.
