Mesoscale Discussion 0573
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0212 PM CDT Tue May 12 2020
Areas affected...portions of central TX
Concerning...Tornado Watch 178...
Valid 121912Z - 122045Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 178 continues.
SUMMARY...A couple of strong to severe storms could still pose a
threat for a tornado and/or strong wind gusts over the next couple
of hours.
DISCUSSION...Scattered thunderstorms continue to show periodic
supercell characteristics and weak low-level rotation across eastern
portions of WW 178. While instability has increased across the area
this afternoon, trends in low-level shear (effective and SRH) over
the past three hours have generally decreased, leading to a messier
conglomeration of storms. Surface analysis also has shown there is
likely some detrimental impact from storms training and/or only
slowly shifting eastward. A meso-beta area of stronger pressure
rises were noted in conjunction with a modest cold pool (surface
temps mid 60s-70 F, compared to upper 70s to mid 80s in surrounding
areas). Some more intense cells may develop on the southern fringes
of this rain-cooled air along a strong temperature gradient and
where MLCAPE values have increased to 1000-1500 J/kg. While shear
has weakened, it remains adequate for at least brief supercell
structures and a severe storm can not be ruled out near the edges of
WW 178. However, a new downstream watch is not expected at this
time.
