Mesoscale Discussion 0589
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK

Areas affected...southeast Iowa and northwest Illinois
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 183...
Valid 150238Z - 150330Z
CORRECTED FOR GRAPHIC ISSUES
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 183
continues.
SUMMARY...The threat for severe wind and hail continues within the
WW183 area. The greatest near-term risk for severe wind will be
across portions of northwest IL.
DISCUSSION...Recent radar trends continue to show a cluster of
storms moving across southeast IA becoming more organized into an
MCS as they move east/northeastward along a diffuse low-level warm
front and instability gradient. Wind damage has already been noted
with this group of storms, and given a supportive convective
environment (1000-2000 J/kg MLCAPE with 30-40 knots of effective
bulk shear), the near-term threat for strong winds will continue
into portions of northwest IL. Further east, a cluster of initially
discrete storms has begun to grow upscale as storm interactions
occur. These storms will continue to pose an isolated wind and hail
threat. Overall, the severe threat will continue for the next
several hours, but boundary layer stabilization will slowly mitigate
the severe potential heading into the overnight hours.
