   Mesoscale Discussion 0631
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
   0332 PM CDT Mon May 18 2020

   Areas affected...Central/South-Central OH...Eastern KY

   Concerning...Tornado Watch 193...

   Valid 182032Z - 182200Z

The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 193 continues.

SUMMARY...Brief tornadoes, as well as damaging wind gusts and
isolated small hail, remain possible from south-central OH through
   central/eastern KY.

DISCUSSION...Several surface features have led to somewhat complex
storm interactions from south-central OH through central KY. Main
surface feature continues to be the cold front, which currently
extends from a weak low about 30 northeast of DAY
southward/south-southwestward through central KY. Another westward
moving surface boundary, perhaps outflow from preceding storms, has
been noted in KILN radar imagery and appears to have influenced new
   storm development west of KILN.

Additionally, pre-frontal storms over northeast KY and far
south-central OH have strengthened per recent radar imagery. This
strengthening may be a result of slightly stronger instability over
this area due to thinner cloud cover and more heating. The westward
moving boundary previously mentioned may also have aided in the
   strengthening.

With relatively weak vertical shear and only modest instability,
these storm mergers and boundary interactions are resulting in
complex mesoscale environment and are highly influencing storm
strength. Low-level flow is not overly strong but recent KJKL and
KILN VAD wind profiles sampled over 100 m2/s2 of 0-1 km
storm-relative helicity. As such, brief tornadoes are still
possible. Damaging wind gusts and isolated small hail also remain
possible, particularly within those storms where
mesoscale-enhancement of the updrafts has occurred.
