Mesoscale Discussion 0633
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0620 PM CDT Mon May 18 2020
Areas affected...central Ohio southward into central and eastern
Kentucky
Concerning...Tornado Watch 193...
Valid 182320Z - 190115Z
The severe weather threat for Tornado Watch 193 continues.
SUMMARY...A tornado or two remain possible within WW 193. The
tornado threat should persist longer across central to eastern
Kentucky through 9 PM EDT.
DISCUSSION...Recent RAP mesoanalysis continues to show sufficient
values of 0-1 km SRH between 100-150 m2/s2 from central OH southward
into central to eastern KY. With a tornado already reported this
afternoon within this environment, the threat for a tornado or two
will persist for at least the next hour within the entire watch
area. This threat is expected to gradually diminish across OH within
the next 1-2 hours as modest MLCAPE across this region decreases
via boundary layer stabilization due to a growing stratiform rain
region. Further south across central to eastern KY, an organized
QLCS will continue moving eastward into an environment that remains
somewhat untouched by prior convection and precipitation, as
suggested by MLCAPE values between 500-1000 J/kg. Although deep
layer shear vectors oriented along the line of storms will continue
to favor a linear storm mode, the combination of low-level
directional shear with sufficient instability should allow the
tornado threat to persist further into the evening hours.
