Mesoscale Discussion 0669
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0249 PM CDT Fri May 22 2020
Areas affected...North and South Carolina
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 202...
Valid 221949Z - 222115Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 202
continues.
SUMMARY...The threat for severe storms with damaging wind, hail and
a brief tornado will persist this afternoon and early evening
through the central Carolinas. Storms will approach the eastern
bound of ww 202 by 21Z, and another WW will likely be needed farther
east into the central and eastern Carolinas by 2030Z.
DISCUSSION...Line of strong to severe storms with embedded bowing
segments extends from southwestern NC through western SC moving east
at 35-40 kt. VWP from Greenville-Spartanburg shows a 50 kt westerly
rear inflow jet through the 2-3 km layer in post outflow region that
appears to be associated with an MCV along northern end of the line.
This suggests deep forcing will continue to drive the squall line
farther east through the destabilizing boundary layer where MLCAPE
ranges from 500-1500 J/kg. Damaging wind, hail and a brief tornado
will remain possible next several hours as activity continues east.
