Mesoscale Discussion 0678
NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK
0926 PM CDT Fri May 22 2020
Areas affected...Southern Oklahoma...North Texas
Concerning...Severe Thunderstorm Watch 205...
Valid 230226Z - 230430Z
The severe weather threat for Severe Thunderstorm Watch 205
continues.
SUMMARY...A severe threat will continue through mid to late evening.
Large hail, wind damage and a couple tornadoes will be possible.
DISCUSSION...A growing convective cluster is ongoing near and just
to the south of the Red River in the vicinity of Wichita Falls,
Texas. This cluster is located very near a maximum of instability
with the RAP estimating MLCAPE near 4500 J/kg. The strong
instability combined with 40 kt of 0-6 km shear, evident on the Fort
Worth WSR-88D VWP, will be favorable for supercells with large hail.
The more vigorous updrafts may produce hailstones greater than 2
inches in diameter. A tornado threat will also exist with the more
dominant supercells within this cluster. The severe threat should
gradually transition eastward across north Texas over the next few
hours. A severe threat may also occur in far southern Oklahoma. In
addition to large hail, a wind damage threat should exist and may
increase as cells gradually expand in coverage and become more
linear in nature.
